FEMALE SNOWY OWL
The Snowy Owl is one of the largest North American owls measuring anywhere from 23 to 26 inches in length with a wingspan of 54 to 65 inches.
This beautiful owl is usually white in color with thin black horizontal bars or spots although the adult males can be almost pure white.
The snowy owl has a rounded head with yellow eyes and a black bill. Their legs are heavily covered in feathers to insulate them from their cold habitat which ranges from the arctic regions of North America to as far south as Washington or Montana when food is scarce. The snowy owl primarily lives in the open grasslands or fields of the arctic tundra making its nests on the highest, driest parts of the tundra.
The snowy owl is one of the few owls that hunt both in daylight and at night. Their favorite food is lemmings but they also eat birds, fish, mice and small marine animals. During migration their prey includes ground squirrels, hares, moles, rabbits, rats, shrews and weasels.
